Counselling: What to Expect
Taking the first step toward therapy can feel daunting. Here is what you can expect during your initial consultation:
The Intake: Your first session (typically 50 minutes) is focused on understanding your history, current concerns, and goals for therapy.
Collaborative Planning: Together with your therapist, you will establish a personalized treatment plan, including the frequency of sessions.
Ongoing Support: Subsequent sessions will be tailored to the client's processing style, history, and current needs.
For some, this involves developing cognitive insight—understanding the patterns, beliefs, and histories that influence current behaviors.
For others who already possess strong intellectual insight but still feel "stuck," our work shifts toward somatic development and somatic integration. This means learning to connect with, regulate, and release stress or trauma stored directly within the nervous system and the body.
The Assessment Process: Step-by-Step
To ensure accuracy and depth, our assessment process is divided into distinct phases:
Clinical Intake (50 Mins): A developmental history interview with the client (or parents/guardians) to discuss current concerns, medical history, and developmental milestones.
Testing Sessions (3–6 Hours): One-on-one standardized testing. These sessions may be split across multiple days to prevent fatigue, particularly for younger children.
Analysis & Report Writing: The clinician scores the assessments, integrates history and school records, and drafts a comprehensive psychological report.
Feedback Consultation (50 Mins): We meet with you to review the results, discuss any diagnoses, and outline a detailed list of recommendations for school, home, or workplace accommodations.
